The latest scientific research has proved that the oral cavity condition has a significant impact on the body’s resistance to various types of infections. Below we explain what exactly this interdependence is about.

The results of the research presented on the IDWeek conference held each year in New Orleans unequivocally indicate the correlation between the state of oral health and the tendency of the body to fall on colds, flu or pneumonia. These results inspired American researchers to conduct a separate study that could confirm them. Researchers from Virginia Commonwealth University invited 26,000 people to participate in the study. It turned out that participants who didn’t regularly use dental services were more exposed to bacterial pneumonia than those who tend to visit the dentist twice a year.

Lungs: what do they have to do with teeth?

This brings the question: what relationship occurs between the lungs and the teeth? The common denominator is Gram-positive bacteria. They can cause pneumonia through penetration from the mouth deep into the body. Regular dental inspections help you find out if unwanted bacteria don’t wreak havoc on your mouth. Thanks to the research, it’s possible to correct their multiplication in time and prevent not only pneumonia, but also many less serious infections. It’s worth knowing that harmful bacteria in huge clusters can take up to 2 kg of adult body weight. If the immune system is functioning well, there is no infection, but in states of reduced immunity they pose a serious health risk.

Pneumonia – statistical data

Pneumonia is a quite common condition: 450 million people from around the world suffer from it every year. This disease is the most dangerous for children (especially those before the age of 5), adolescents and the elderly (75+). Very often it is a consequence of a lighter viral infection, for example, influenza or sinusitis, which is promoted by negligence in oral hygiene.

How to avoid infection?

The basis is, of course, regular brushing. But it’s not enough. Dental floss should also be used because bacteria accumulate not only on the tooth surface, but above all in hard-to-reach areas, in crevices and plaque. In addition, it’s worth visiting a dentist regularly, so that you could remove tartar from time to time. People who wear dentures should use special preparations with bactericidal action and get adequate containers (it is not recommended to store dentures in a glass with water).
