How golf balls are made

Have you ever played golf or at least minigolf? And have you ever wondered what its origins are? It’s quite debatable, but generally, golf is believed to have originated in Scotland in the Middle Ages. However, it hasn’t caught on until the late 19th century. Only then did it spread to other parts of the United Kingdom, as well as the United States. Thanks to that, it gained in popularity and became the sport, frequently associated with the English upper crust.

Today, it’s the sport played in the whole world. To play it, you need, besides some basic skills, specialist equipment. The most important tools are a club and a golf ball. For more experienced and advanced players, a professional outfit and golf shoes are also required. But how to choose the best Titleist golf ball if there are so many different types? To help you with this hard choice, first of all, you should familiarise yourself with the general information about golf and how these balls are made. Then, you should be prepared enough to make a purchase.

Golf rules

The first golf rules were written down by one of the medical students in his diary. He came from Edinburgh and described how this sport should be played. According to him, the most important thing was the posture you adopted. You should bend your legs slightly and hold the muscles of your legs, back, and arms so that you could hole, using a club and a golf ball.

The oldest surviving golf roles will also be found at the so-called Leith Rules, in the National Library of Scotland. They say, for example, that the tee should be located upon the ground, or you can’t change the ball during one game. This collection of rules became the basis for all further improvements in golf.

The type of material

Regarding the ball itself, one of the crucial things is the type of material from which it’s made. Here, the two materials are usually used, namely plastic and rubber. We can distinguish two types of balls. One of them is a two-piece ball containing a reliable rubber center and a durable thermoplastic cover. The other is a three-piece ball, which consists of a smaller rubber or liquid-filled core, the rubber thread wound around it, and ionomer or balata rubber cover.

As time goes by, the center of the golf ball has been further improved by using the material called polybutadiene. However, it must have been strengthened with zinc since it was too soft. Thanks to that, the quality of the golf ball significantly improved, which meant that more manufacturers started producing it in this way. The key advantage of polybutadiene is undoubtedly the ball’s bounce.

The production process

When it comes to the production process, it’s quite complicated. Making one three-piece ball takes around 30 days. Two-piece balls are less demanding and can be made in one day. Generally, the whole manufacturing process can be divided into four parts. The first stage is to form the center of about 1.5 inches (3.75 cm). Then, it’s time to create the cover and characteristic dimples found on the surface of the golf ball. Next step is to apply two coats of paint to the ball, mark it with the logo and put a final clear coat to make it shine like a diamond. The final stage is about drying and packaging products, ready for sale.

Quality control

Having made the golf ball, that’s not the end of the story. The ball should be checked whether its center is perfectly round and whether it meets the USGA’s standards. It must be resistant and tested at any velocity, spin rate, and launch angle. In this way, different statistics can be made, for example, estimating apogee angle, total distance, and statistical accuracy area. Such information is crucial for the players at the top level, aiming at the highest results.

Knowing all this, you should be ready to purchase your first golf ball in a golf shop. Before the transaction, you can always ask the salesperson about some details of a particular ball. In case of any doubts and questions, they can advise you on the type of ball you should play, depending on your skills.
