When your goal is set, you need to think what motivates you to reach this goal. Maybe you always dreamed to watch movies on foreign language without subtitles? Let yourself to set all kind of ambitions because you won’t be able to reach anything without setting goals. Set a goal to become the best and work on it every day!

2. Divide the skill into several sub-skills

This part of work means to make research on the skill you want to learn and list all its components. The main purpose of this step is to think analytically, so don’t worry how many points you will get. Concentrate on the particular skill. For example, if you dream to become a writer, these are some sub-skills you may write down:
• Writing style: tone, ways to deliver your message to readers, genre and style of the writing.
• Rules of writing: how to build a particular document, which parts any piece of writing must have, etc.
• Ways to improve your writing: using hyperbolas, metaphors, and other things to make your writing better.

3. Think what can cause you to give up

If you already tried to learn something new, you probably know that first three-five days of studying are the hardest. You are just at the very beginning and from time to time, you may have a big temptation to quit. Think thoroughly about all things that may lead you to this, and make a list. The next step is to keep yourself away from such things. For example, if you are studying a new language, you may face a problem it’s hard for you to remember all those rules and words, so you start to think you would never do it. Try to solve this problem by making notes in your exercise book. This would help you to remember new words because you will see them, pronounce, and then write down. After a week of learning, temptation of giving up will be smaller or disappear. Be strong and never let such things to make you quit from learning something new. But in the same way, don’t be too hard on yourself. Make short breaks and motivate yourself when you have done everything you planned to do. This will motivate you to move forward.

4. Focus on the most important part

About 80% of effects come from 20% of efforts (Pareto principle). That’s why you have to concentrate on that 20% that are the most important in learning the particular skill. Take your list of sub-skills and think which part of them is the most important? Then make a plan how to learn them.

5. Concentrate on the one thing without multitasking

When you are learning that 20% of sub-skills, never try to study more than one of them. Remember that it will slow down your progress, that’s why you should make a clear plan of learning and follow it properly.

Follow these five steps and always start small. Don’t let anything to lose your goals in learning. If you will do this right, you will be on your way to improving your mastery.
