Suits are not the cheapest clothing. As such, you want to prolong their life as much as possible. Especially if they are for kids and you have younger kids who could wear them in the future. Taking care of them and storing them properly helps extend their life. You need to take some steps to protect them from damage.

It’s quite necessary to know how to store them, especially if you will not be using them for a long time. When the seasons switch, you will need a change of outfit to match the current weather. In summer, you most likely use light and breathable fabrics. Meanwhile, wool and other thicker textiles are the top choices when it comes to the colder seasons. If you have children that pass one another few years, storing the boys suits well will save you money in the long run.

So the question is, how do you store your suits when the season changes? Here are some of the things you can do to protect your jackets and other clothes, while you keep them away for the time being.

How to Properly Store Suits

Suits are very delicate articles of clothing. Not only that, but they are also expensive. When storing them, you can’t just throw them in a corner. These suits demand proper treatment if you want them to last for years, more so when storing them. Here are some of the steps you need to do when storing them.

  1. Clean the suits first before storing them. You will need to have a regular schedule for your suits’ maintenance. You don’t have to send them to the dry cleaners every time you use it. If you use them regularly, once a month will do. If not, you can have them cleaned once or twice a year. Alternatively, you can use a suit brush to remove the dirt on your jackets. You can also do spot treatments to remove minor stains and odour build-up. When storing them, make sure that they are newly cleaned, so that any dirt or stains won’t stick to your suits. For best results, steam the suits and any waistcoat that comes with it before hanging them.
  2. Use a wooden hanger for your suits. Avoid using plastic or steel hangers, especially ones that are not stainless. The rust can stain your suits when stored for long periods. Racks with rounded edges also help in holding the shape of your jackets. Consider buying them for your clothes.
  3. Store your suits in a dry and cool place, away from direct sunlight. Wetness will attract mildew, which can damage your clothes. Even the weakest sunlight can cause your clothes to fade in colour.
  4. To further protect your suits, you can cover them with a cloth garment bag. It will protect the jackets from dust, moisture, and mildew. Do not use the plastic covers that your dry cleaners often supply as they can still build up inside of these cheap covers. If you have multiple suits, remember to space them out. It helps the jackets’ ventilation.

When stored properly, your suit can last a long time. Not only that, but you can also save money from buying new ones. It’s a shame when you spend hundreds to buy a suit but ruined due to improper storage. Make sure to follow all the best practices when storing your clothes for the next season.
